"When the Titans first came to Azeroth, the old gods ruled it with an iron fist. A terrible war began and the titans emerged victorious. They could not kill the old gods, so instead they chained them beneath the cold earth, but one of the old ones, the god of evil, were too powerful to simply imprison. So the titans channeled all their combined power, destroyed the god of evils physical form and stored his soul in a fish, or more specificially, a herring. They tossed the herring deep into a lake in what would later be known as the Howling Fjord. Then they covered not only the lake, but the entire landscape with snow and ice so the dark one never would awaken. But now, thanks to global warming, the lands of Northrend are melting. And things that were supposed to sleep for eternity, are awakening...."
